not only is Notch no longer profiting from Minecraft (he sold the game, and the entire studio, to Microsoft seven years ago and has not been involved in the game since), but to be honest he has no political relevance to the world any more. Notch is a lonely, awful, racist man in Sweden who is very easy to ignore. Rowling is still profiting off of the entire Harry Potter franchise, and actively making new stories in the series

another important part of this, to me, is that the act of playing Minecraft is quite far detached from Notch’s values. i’m not going to sit here and pretend that there aren’t aspects of Minecraft obviously informed by Notch’s antisemitism (i.e. the design of the villagers, right down to them having golems that protect them) but Minecraft is removed of any narrative; it is a toy box for you to do whatever you want with. JKR created an entire world — lore, history, characters, etc that no matter how many times HP fans reinvent, will always be the core of their fanworks

this is shown even more so through the respective fanbases (if you can even refer to Minecraft’s players as a fandom, which i would argue you shouldn’t) — people who play Minecraft are just people who play Minecraft, some of them good, some of them bad, most of them just people — but the Harry Potter fandom is full of racists, antisemites, and most especially transphobes. i had to watch the way HP fans acted towards me, a trans woman, for half a decade, and i can tell you that no matter how cool you and your friends are (or more likely, think you are) the wider fan base is full of open transmisogynists. hell, there’s even a whole new Harry Potter renaissance on the terf side of tumblr.

most people who play Minecraft just like putting blocks in places, but Harry Potter fans have to either ignore or agree with all the awful bigoted nonsense the books are filled with just to even engage with the texts
