FUCK YEAH BALLOON PIKACHU

will-die-without-chai:

I’ve been observing this since I entered the pride and prejudice fandom that many people have prejudiced themselves against some characters and they’ve created this narrative of severe dislike around them? I understand that the book is through Elizabeth’s perspective and so are most of the adaptations we see and well, Elizabeth sees what Elizabeth sees and that ofcourse we are meant to be influenced by her outlook. But that’s what the book is trying to tell us! Elizabeth is not always right in her judgement of people. No one is! Everyone has their own set of misconceptions and preconceived notions about people and they tend not to look beyond it and that just one person’s side of story is never going to be accurate! But people ignore it outright and set out to hate the characters!

Like… Lydia Bennet. She is a 15 year old girl, youngest of 5 sisters (out of which 2 are very famous throughout the town). She is a bit of an airhead and she wants romance in her life. She is in every sense of the word a normal, hormonal teenager. Her father is very clearly not pleased with her but doesn’t try to rectify her… Like ever and neither does Elizabeth who notices what Lydia is upto but doesn’t care enough to talk to her but rather just calls her ditzy and flirty and leaves and Mrs. Bennet is ofcourse not the best influence. I can imagine what being in that position is like where you are treated in 2 very opposite ways. Someone thinks you’re grown up and should do grown up things and someone else says that you’re a ditzy little, good for nothing girl. And it created this conflict. Even if Lizzie or Jane or Mrs. Bennet didn’t imply it, she clearly thinks it a competition. She wants to be better than her sisters, she wants to feel important, that she is someone who is of any consequence. No one thinks she is capable of stuff, well, she will show them. And the only way she knows how is to catch herself a man and marry, coz that’ll make her family happy, wouldn’t it? And would make her important, wouldn’t it?

Enter, Wickham! Someone who was earlier into her superior sister but now apparently he sees her and thinks she is worthy of appreciation. Makes her feel important and needed, assures her that he will marry her! She wanted to get married, it will make her someone of importance I’m the family! She’ll be noticed, before her sisters, at last.

Lydia Bennet, a 15-16 year old girl was manipulated by a 27 year old man into running away with him with the fake promise of marrying her. He, a man of past history of pedophilia, who once again came after a teenage girl and actually succeeded this time coz this girl already feels unloved enough. But I scarcely see this take on it. George Wickham was a pedophile and a predator that preyed on Lydia Bennet and I don’t really think Lydia is anything but a victim here. And I don’t like all the hate she gets. And that’s the hill I am gonna die on.

  2. iqraars said: Totally agree. She was ditzy, but really, it was because of a lack of proper guidance. You wouldn’t expect a girl of around 15 to actually understand people, when even Lizzie couldn’t. Moreover, it was Wickham, who had almost gotten away with it earlier. This time he totally succeeded because there wasn’t a very observant family member.
